Psychology Externship & Teaching Practice

Build real-world clinical skills in therapy, psychological testing, and neuropsychological assessment at Loudoun Psychological Services.

Externship Program

The externship programs at Loudoun Psychological Services (LPS) provide comprehensive training designed to give students practical experience in therapy, psychological testing, and neuropsychological testing. The program runs for the full academic year, with an optional summer externship available for advanced externs.

Externs receive a stipend and work alongside licensed mental health professionals in a supportive, collaborative environment. You will gain hands-on experience:

  • Conducting clinical assessments and diagnostic evaluations;
  • Developing and implementing treatment plans;
  • Providing evidence-based therapy for a range of mental health concerns.

The program emphasizes clinical skill development, professional growth, and ethical practice. Externs receive regular supervision and feedback from experienced clinicians, participate in training seminars and case conferences, and have access to resources that support ongoing learning and growth.

Therapy externs participate in weekly group supervision and gain exposure to many evidence-based interventions, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Psychodynamic approaches
  • Family Systems approaches
  • Advanced externs may also gain exposure to Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Polyvagal-informed interventions.

Upon completion, externs will have developed a broad range of clinical skills and practical experience that prepares them for a career in mental health, with the confidence to work with diverse clients and provide evidence-based assessment and treatment.

Teaching Practice & Assessment Training

As a student assessment extern at LPS, you will have the opportunity to conduct psychological and neuropsychological evaluations with a diverse patient population. Evaluation batteries can range from brief (approximately 2 hours) to comprehensive (5–6 hours).

You will receive training in all key components of the evaluation process, including:

  • Clinical interviewing and case formulation;
  • Test selection, administration, and scoring;
  • Interpretation of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral data;
  • Report writing and treatment recommendations;
  • Consultation with referral sources and feedback sessions.

Under the guidance of experienced supervisors, you will receive tailored supervision for each assessment case, with a minimum of one hour of formal supervision per case. Continuous “informal” supervision is also provided during test administration and report writing.

Both individual and group supervision are available, allowing you to present and discuss neuropsychological cases with peers and supervisors, deepen your understanding, and refine your clinical judgment.

This externship typically requires a commitment of 16 hours per week and can last from 9–12 months for full-year externs. A structured summer externship option is also available.

Join LPS to gain hands-on experience and expand your skills in psychological and neuropsychological evaluation within a supportive teaching practice.
